Up with the Upperdog!

While working on a project at work today, I came across a type-written script from an internal radio broadcast. It was in with some papers from the late 60’s early 70’s, so I thought I’d give it a read.

Two things struck me: 1) we used to have a radio station at our facility??? 2) this could easily have been written TODAY, as the same things apply.

Once home, I googled part of it, and was surprised to find a page from a newspaper called “The Andover News”, dated November 9th, 1967. It has a column called “For Society’s Sake: Up with Upperdogs!” Turns out it was written by the late Dr. Upton, President of Beloit University in Beloit, WI. (BOLD emphasis added by BigZig)

I have just about reached the end of my tolerance for the way our society at the present time seems to have sympathetic concern only for the misfit, the pervert, the drug addict, the drifter, the ne’er-do-well, the maladjusted, the chronic criminal, the underachiever, the loser – in general, the underdog.

We have lost touch with reality and become warped – if not in fact psychotic – in our attachments.

IT IS TIME for SOMEONE to stand up and say, “I’m for the upperdog!”

I’m for the achiever.

The one who sets out to do something and does it.

The one who recognizes the problems and opportunities at hand and endeavors to deal with them.

The one who is successful at his immediate task because he is not worrying about someone else’s failings.

The one who doesn’t consider it ‘square’ to be looking for more to do, who isn’t always rationalizing why he shouldn’t be doing what he is doing.

The one, in short, who carries the work of his part of the world squarely on his shoulders.

Not necessarily the wealthy, the ones in authority, the gifted. Just the doer, the achiever – regardless of his status, his opulence, his native endowment.

WE ARE NOT born equal; we are born unequal. And the talented are no more responsible for their talents than the underprivileged for their plight.

The measure of each should be what he does with his inherited position. No one should be damned by the environmental condition of his life – whether it be privileged or underprivileged.

It is a dying fashion to pay respect to those who achieve – who really ‘have it’, to use the vernacular. This the the day when the fashion is to be for the underdog.

The attitude is being developed that if you really want people to care for you – who doesn’t – don’t be successful. Be a misfit, a loser, a victim of one’s environment.

I’m not sure of the reason for what appears to be a general psychological aberration. But I suspect it springs from a massive social guilt.

THE ONE MOST CERTAIN point is that our problems will be solved by doers – not people with good intentions, but people with good deeds…not those who talk a good game but those who play a good game – the achievers.

We will never create a good society, much less a great one, until individual excellence and achievement are not only respected but encouraged.

That is why I am for the upperdog, the achiever, the succeeder.

I’m for building a better society. And this will only be done by those who take seriously their responsibility for achievement , for making the most of their native ability, for getting done the job at hand.


As profound now as it likely was then.

Empty Places

Perspective. That’s what it is all about. At least for me, lately. I don’t know about you. I like to think that I am not the only person who sits around (stands) and thinks about decisions that I have made, decision that i NEED to make, and of course, cookies the pros and cons of both of those. And cookies.

While I try not to regret decisions that I have made but rather try to find the learning opportunity that they presented me, I am not always able to wrap my head around that perspective. Some are easier than others, but not all are simple. I have found that several of my choices have left me with certain feelings of emptiness, leading me to think that I must fill those voids with something new, with better choices, or with new people and experiences.

I’m learning that this isn’t always the case, and perhaps it shouldn’t always be the case. I have found myself thinking that there is no way that my life could be considered ‘full’ if there were still voids. There have been MANY sleepless nights and restless days trying to find something to fill those gaps. Please tell me I’m not the only one?

Then today, quite by accident, I found this in a book that had been lying on my desk at work:

“Even in the fullest life, there are bound to be empty places. Sometimes they become sacred ground; a place of memories. Other times they wait to be filled.”

I’ve been thinking about it all day, and shared it with a great friend of mine. Now, I share it with you. I encourage you to think about it, too, and if the mood strikes share it with some people who you are close with. I cannot give you a source, as the author was not credited (Google couldn’t even help me!).

Are you NEEDY???

Recently I was told by a mental health professional, “you just described yourself as needy”. As if i needed to hear THAT…SOOO helpful, thanks. I pay you HOW MUCH??? Jackwagon.

Those were my original thoughts. I’ve had several hours to mull it over, and here’s my new reaction to what he said: SOOO helpful, thanks. I pay you HOW MUCH??? Jackwagon.

He had asked me a question to which I answered “because I feel invisible, like my ideas, thoughts, and comments don’t matter. I don’t feel like I bring any value to the table.” He looked right at me and said, “youjustdescribedyourselfasneedy”.

And you know what? I AM NEEDY. I NEED to have my thoughts validated. I NEED to at least believe that my input matters. I NEED to feel loved. I NEED to run/exercise/hike/play/have fun. I NEED COOKIES.

If we take a good look at ourselves, we ALL have needs that extend beyond food, oxygen, and shelter from inclement weather. We DO. And those needs help us define who we are to other people. Is there such thing as TOO NEEDY? Perhaps, but that is a subjective matter; we all have different levels of needy-acceptance for other people in our lives.

I am planning to examine my NEEDS versus my WANTS, and then go from there. I encourage you to do the same. Once we’ve decided which true NEEDS are not being met, let’s work on what steps we should take to FULFILL those NEEDS in a way that won’t cause others to push us away.

I think we can all benefit from this exercise. You?

This time of year it is very common to come across pictures on the web of people beginning their newly resolved fitness journeys. I have mad respect for people who are willing to throw public scorn to the wind and post pictures of themselves in various stages of being dressed all the while showing more skin than they might otherwise display.
These brave souls will put “BEFORE” underneath their pictures to be sure that no one believes that these are their destination photos, but more of a “here i am, at my worst, and then i’ll get better”. I really admire this. I don’t think that I could ever do it. I mean, I’m relatively healthy, and I won’t even go shirtless at the beach or local swimming hole. I get the whole concept of the “BEFORE” picture.
What I DON’T understand are the “AFTER” pictures. Think about it. If you are on a fitness journey for whatever reason, my suspicion is that EVERY DAY is part of the journey. I don’t know of anyone who is “done”. Every day we’re shufflin’ to either improve or maintain. We aren’t finished; the wellness/fitness lifestyle is a work in progress.
Here’s my challenge to all of us:
If you have before and after pictures on your blog/FB/locker/dashboard…change the caption on the “AFTER” picture to read “DURNING”. I believe that it will serve to remind all of us that the journey has no appreciable end. The only REAL “AFTER” picture would look like this:

Go for the GOAL(s)…

Inspired by a post by Sandra over at OrganicRunnerMom, i thought it would be fun to try to come up with some BIG Spring Goals (mmmm….spring rolls….) and then some concrete ones for the week. Why not, right? Ok, after you’ve read hers, come back and read mine. After that, share some of your own? Link to your blog in the comments….


1) Finish out the Winter Wild Series. I had such a great time at the race, how can i NOT go to all of them? The series finale at Bretton Woods should be a great time. If anyone knows of a couch I can crash on that Friday night, please let me know? Thanks….

2) First marathon of 2013 will be in MAY at the Shires of Vermont Marathon. I’ve not been down in that area of our state for a long time, and this seems like as good a reason as any to get down there and run.

3) Drop 7 pounds by end of February. I’ve joined  dietbet, with the original intention of helping to motivate others to lose 4% of their body weight. Do I think that I really need to lose the weight? Well, not really, but in doing so I will gain some definition around my gut, which is ALWAYS beneficial. Am I right????


1) Sweat every day

2) Run every other day (M/W/Sat (long)

3) Improve sleep

4) Study NASM information every night


Those should keep me motivated and busy, no? Yes.

Dinky-do and Boobie-do

A few years ago I met a nurse who coined the phrase “dinky-do disease”. I’ve since expanded it to include boobie-do disease. Bear with me; I’ve been wanting to write this post for quite some time, and after I read a status update from Tony (the anti-jared) in which he stated that he was happy to be able to see a certain part of his body again, I became re-inspired.

Many of us guys are either currently suffering from dinky-do disease, know someone who is suffering, or have suffered ourselves and are now on the mend. I don’t want to say ‘cured’, simply because it is an ongoing process, and not just something that you are able to walk away from. Same thing applies to the ladies with boobie-do disease.

Granted, there are some who are born with a distinct….disadvantage (?), and are therefore excluded from the diagnoses. What on EARTH (the ONLY planet not named after a God, btw) am I talking about????

Ok, here are the definitions:

Dinky-do disease occurs when your belly sticks out farther (further?) than your dinky-do. (Caveat here is that the diagnosis CANNOT be made immediately after exiting a cold shower, pool, river, etc.)

Boobie-do disease is the diagnosis when your belly sticks out further

(farther?) than your boobies do.

Seriously. Take a look down, next time you are in the shower. Do you suffer from either one (can’t be both, really….)? If so, are you presently, ACTIVELY, taking steps to rid yourself of the disease?

If not, WHY not? Do you need direction? Do you need motivational emails? Do you need….what? “Help me help YOU” –J. McGuire- Really. How can I help? How can WE, your online and IRL friends, help? We’re here for you. For us.

Help eradicate dinky-do and booby-do diseases. You’ll be glad you did.
